What Is Mountain Prominence?
Topographic prominence is different from a mountain's elevation. Elevation measures how high a summit is above sea level, while prominence measures how far a mountain rises above the surrounding terrain.
A mountain can therefore have a very high elevation without having exceptionally high prominence, particularly when it is located within a large mountain range surrounded by higher peaks.
On this map, each mountain is shown with two measurements:
Prominence: the vertical height of the summit relative to the surrounding landscape.
Elevation: the height of the summit above sea level.
This makes the map useful for comparing mountains based on both their absolute height and their relative importance in the surrounding terrain.

Highest Peaks vs. Most Prominent Peaks
It is important to distinguish between the world's highest mountains and the world's most prominent mountains.
A height ranking orders mountains by elevation above sea level. A prominence ranking looks at how independently a summit rises above the surrounding terrain.
This means that some mountains with lower elevations can still have extremely high prominence, while some very high mountains within large mountain ranges can have lower prominence.
This map focuses specifically on prominent summits, providing a different perspective from a list based only on elevation.
